In a fully functioning and healthy mouth, upper and lower forces are balanced and equal. However, this balance is quickly lost when we lose a tooth.
Here are a few things that can happen when you lose a tooth.
Opposing tooth may super erupt.
Neighbouring teeth tilt.
Food gets stuck in the gap possibly causing decay.
Loss of bone in the area where the tooth is missing.
Loss of ability to properly chew.
What is a Dental Bridge?
A Dental Bridge is when two or more crowns are connected together to replace one or more missing teeth. The Dental Bridge will be placed over your natural teeth which will need to be prepared to receive the Bridge. Unlike Dentures, Dental Bridges are permanent fixtures that look and feel natural and do not have to be removed.
Types of Bridges
1. Cantilever Bridges – This is when only one tooth is used to support the missing tooth (as seen above)
2. Maryland Bridges – These are considered the conservative option compared to conventional Bridges – two wings are used on adjacent teeth to support the missing tooth – minimal to no preparation required
3. Traditional Bridges – This is when both teeth adjacent to the missing tooth are prepared to accept the Bridge. (see above)
The price of a dental bridge will vary depending on several factors including the placement and material used. Dental bridge costs are on average $500 to $1,500.
Both implants and bridges have their advantages and disadvantages. When choosing between an implant or a bridge it is best to talk to our dentists in Craigieburn
